Reading: We took a couple days to get back into the routine of things with our reading block time. The students had a hard time staying on task in the beginning because they were so excited to see all their friends. We are finally back into the groove of things and starting back up with our reading groups. Awesome celebration: we all either stayed at the same reading level or moved up during our 3-week break!
Math: We finished off Unit 3 in our math curriculum this past week. We ended the unit talking about money and change. Some students had a hard time counting back or up with such large numbers. Please continue to work with your child at home when talking about money and change. It is very important that they know how to count money and change by the end of this quarter.
Social Studies: Instead of doing Science, we have moved into our first Social Studies unit. We have been talking about the first settlers from England and how they came to Plymouth and Jamestown looking for gold and religious freedom. We have been comparing life of colonial children with our own lives. The students have noticed many differences, but also some similarities that never seem to change (like wanting to have fun!)
Writing: We are starting a new writing unit this quarter. We have been looking at different comics and graphic novels and seeing the different features of the book. I think it is important to expose the students to many different forms of writing and I think this unit was a natural progression from our fiction unit. We have been looking at a comic creator website that the students can also use at home. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/comic/index.html
