This past week, we did many class introductions and started talking a lot about our classroom expectations. We went over how we are now Second Graders and so a lot of things we did in First Grade, we won't be doing in Second. Many of them were VERY upset that we no longer have a set class recess! I am hoping to get the students used to just having one recess a day because there is just so much to get in!
We read a lot of books about taking risks and being kind. I really want our classroom to feel like a community and family. I want them to care for one another and to be kind. We discussed how sometimes, life is not fair and we may not get what we want. Hopefully all our discussions will really build a strong classroom community where everyone feels like they belong and they are loved.
We have started our math and have been just reviewing different skills from First Grade. We talked a little bit about the calendar, money, and time. Please continue to work on money and time with your child. Some of them are having a hard time with both. For time, one suggestion could be to ask them throughout the day what time it is. We are using analog clocks in the classroom. I know they are becoming obsolete, but I do still think the skill is necessary. Also, for time a suggestion could be to take out some loose change in your pockets/purse and have your child count it. If they get it correct, they could keep the change. I have heard that technique helps the children learn to count money really fast! :)
We are starting our Insect Unit in Science. This past week, we talked about what it means to be scientists and we will be looking at bees this upcoming week.
Your child should have brought home some Math flashcards on green cardstock. They only have +0 facts. On Friday, I will give a timed test for +0 facts If your child passes the test, they will get their +1 facts on Monday. Please keep all their flashcards together and continue to build upon the facts they have already learned. DO NOT throw any of the cards away. Please let me know if you need a set again.
We will begin our spelling this upcoming week. Everyone will begin with List 1.
