Reading: In second grade, we are continuing to learn what it means to understand stories better. We are learning to think about them deeper and really be able to have discussions about different lessons we can learn from the book. Instead of just simply retelling the story, we are starting to discuss about character changes and different lessons characters have learned.
Math: We started the week by talking about place value. We used base-10 blocks to help us think about what place value meant. Many of the students had light bulb moments when they realized that 10 ones is the same as a ten block. Each of the ones, tens, and hundreds blocks are part of place value. The students also started to look at money again and review the skills they learned at the beginning of second grade and in first grade.
Science: We are finishing off our insect unit for the quarter. We finished talking the unit by talking about the cricket. The cricket is different than the other insects we have learned about because they have long, strong hind legs which help them to jump up to 20 times their body length! They also go through incomplete metamorphosis because they do not go through the larva (caterpillar) and pupa (chrysalis/cocoon) stage, but they turn into a nymph.
Writing: We finished off our fiction stories, but going back to many of the stories we have already written and fixing them up. We discussed how many authors go back and reread their stories to see if they make sense. Authors also check for punctuation and spelling. Next week, we will have the opportunity to share our stories with one another and celebrate our "published" books together!
Superstar of the Week: We will not have a Superstar this week due to the shortened week. When we get back from break, we will learn more about Anika!
