Sorry this week's blog is a tad late (or really late). The weekend got away from me and Tuesday seemed like catch up all day! Hope you all had a lovely Labor Day weekend!!
Reading: We are currently discussing the strategy of visualizing in reading. The students have been practicing by listening to the language different authors choose to use to describe what is happening in the story. Visualizing helps us to remember and understand the story better. We are starting to move away from just reading the words, but really understanding what is going on in the story.
Math: Students were reintroduced to Fact Families (Triangles), Name Collection boxes, and also Frames and Arrows puzzles. These different tools may seem confusing, but do foster mathematical thinking beyond rote memorization. Students will continue to use these tools to practice and develop a deeper math and number sense throughout the year.
Science: We were able to finally learn about the ant! The students have learned a great deal about insects and saw that the ant was no different in body parts from all the other insects we have studied. We learned about the specific roles of ants and how they are both similar and different to the honey bee.
Writing: The students have a better sense of what makes a story a fiction story. We are now working on different strategies to make our stories more full. We discussed how all characters have been internal and external qualities and authors use their senses to describe what is going on.
Superstar of the Week: Next week will be Audrey. We can't wait to learn more about her!
Upcoming Important Dates:
