Reading: We have finished off our summarizing unit. The students had a harder time going from retelling with a beginning, middle, and end, to extending it to five different main points in a story. We will continue to work on this skill as the year progresses. As students read books at home, please continue to work on retelling a story with 5 main points.
Math: The new set up for our math block is going very well for the students. Because I am able to meet with students in small groups, it seems as if they are being challenged more to their level and are getting deeper understandings of the different skills we are learning.
Math Facts: The students seem to be practicing their math facts and are continuing to gain fluency in different facts every week. The Xtra Math website seems to be helping with many students. If you would like login information for your child at home, please let me know and I can send a letter home.
Social Studies: We finished off our Social Studies unit looking at the Declaration of Independence. The students seemed to getting a better grasp of why July 4th is so important for our country. Though the students may not have a full understanding of the implications of the Revolutionary War, they do seem to have a small grasp of the struggle the colonists had to endure to gain their freedom when they first arrived in the United States.
Writing: We are in full swing in our non-fiction writing unit. The students are able to pick out and name different non-fiction text features which are not present in many fiction books. This past week, the students thought about different topics they might want to write about and will start writing their first books this upcoming week.
Superstar of the Week: Our Superstar of the week this week will be Sarea. We can't wait to learn more about her!!
