Hopefully your child(ren) have been talking about this at the dinner table or during homework time, but we have been studying the prairie for the past couple weeks. The students have been fascinated by the deep roots of prairie plants as well as the fact that there is less than 1% of the original prairie left in Illinois. We have been discussing the prairie ecosystem and the different components, from excellent soil to many plant adaptations that have occurred in order to better survive hot and dry summers and cold winters.
This upcoming week, we will take a closer look at the animals of the prairie. We will be discussing the different adaptations animals have had to make in order to survive in the tall grasses.
Our unit will culminate as we head to Meadowbrook Park on September 11 to take a closer look at prairie plants and to walk through the tall grasses. Ask your student about what they find interesting about the prairie!
