I apologize for not keeping up with the updates for the website. I thought I had updated it last week and when I checked this morning, all I had were pictures!! SO sorry. I will try my best to be better at keeping you all in the loop!!
On a side note, some of the teachers and staff were thinking about how we could give back to the kids at our school. We have decided to try to adopt a child for the holidays and get them a gift of around $25 since some children may not have families who can afford to get them a gift. As we were talking, we thought maybe some families would like to be involved as well. We will not send out a flyer about it, but do it more as word of mouth. So, if you would like to adopt one of the Kenwood children this holiday and buy them a gift, please let

Reading: We have started to work on summarizing during our shared reading time. We start off by predicting what we think the problem of the story will be. Afterwards, we talk about whether our predictions for the problem was right. The students then make a prediction about what they think the solution of the story will be. The cycle of going from predicting to summarizing fits in very well. After we read the whole book, the students are able to talk about the problem, solution, and ending of the story. Next week, we will be working on actually writing out our summaries.
Math: We are starting to work on 2-digit addition and subtraction more closely. Most of the students have picked up on how to do 2-digit addition. When we move to subtraction, I think some of the students will be a bit confused, but much of their learning will take place from repetition. Please also practice with your child at home.
Science: We just wrapped up our unit on Sound. The students enjoyed figuring out that sound comes from vibrations. It was a tougher unit for some of the students because there was so much vocabulary that went along which they simply had to memorize (like pitch, volume amplifier, timbre).
Social Studies: We are starting a new unit in Social Studies. We will be getting a quick overview of the Revolutionary War and the events that lead up to the war. We will be talking about unfair taxes and reasons why the colonists had to go to war with the British.
Writing: We are still working on our comic books. The students have gotten better about actually having developed stories that go along with their pictures. We are continually working on developing our plots and also our punctuation and grammar. When working on spelling sentences, please remind your students to check for capitals and ending punctuation.
