Reading: We are still working on what it looks like when we write a good summary of the books we read. The students are having a hard time determining the difference between a detail and an important event. We will continue to work on this skill.
Math: We are starting a new math format this quarter. Instead of me lecturing everyday and then having the students practice in their math journals, we will be using a Daily 5 Math format. I will give a short lesson in the beginning and then the students will either do activities on their own or with a partner. As the students are working independently or with a partner, I will be meeting with smaller math groups. This week, we practiced different activities we could do while the teacher is meeting with students. Hopefully this format will help me to meet all the needs of the students. I felt like whole class instruction was not helping everyone in the classroom.
Math Facts: We have learned different strategies for memorizing our math facts this past week. Hopefully some of this will help the students. We also all got a chance to practice on the Xtra Math website. Please also feel free to use this math website at home. If you need information or login again, please let me know and I can get you a copy.
Social Studies: This past week, the students were able to learn hands on what it felt like for the colonists to be taxed unfairly. Queen May (first grade teacher) came and taxed the students with Starbursts. At first, the students were very happy because they all got 20 Starbursts each and they were able to eat a couple here and there (by directives from the Queen). As time went on, the Queen started to tax them for using the carpet, their mailboxes, etc. The students were VERY upset and were ready to declare war. The simluation really helped the students understand better what it meant to be taxed unfairly. Hopefully it gave the students a glimpse of what it was like for the colonists in the Revolutionary War.
Writing: We have started a new writing unit this quarter. We have been looking at different non-fiction texts and will be writing our own books soon. We looked at how non-fiction books are very different than fiction books. They have different features like Table of Contents, captions, diagrams, photographs, labels, headings, etc. If possible, please try to rea
