This is just a friendly reminder that we are attending the Illinois Volleyball game this Saturday, November 7th. The kids have been asked to form a fan tunnel for the team as they run out onto the court. Please be at the game promptly at 6:20pm. We will find a section to sit together. Please be sure your children (siblings are invited too) are at the south end of Huff Hall (by the band) by 6:30pm. Thanks so much and look forward to seeing you there! (If you did not order tickets from me beforehand but would still like to attend, you can buy tickets for full price at the door!)

I have noticed that very few students have their math facts memorized. I believe this is a foundation for their math skills so I will be pushing math facts for the rest of the school year. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, each student will be given a 1-minute test. Students will need to receive a 50/56 in order to pass that test and move onto the next. These tests will only add 1-2 new facts each time. If a student does not pass the test, they will need to take their test home and do the back side. The back side will be an exact copy of the test. This will be HOMEWORK. If a student passes the test, they will not have math facts homework. For every 5 tests a student passes, they will receive a prize. I am hoping this will be incentive enough for students to be practicing their math facts every night. Thanks!
Thursday night, October 15, at 6:30pm, there will be a dedication ceremony for the newly renovated Kenwood. Please be sure to join us, starting in the new gym. There will be a short program, school tours, as well as light refreshments. Bring the whole family!

The students have been fascinated by the deep roots of prairie plants as well as the fact that there is less than 1% of the original prairie left in Illinois. We have been discussing the prairie ecosystem and the different components, from excellent soil to many plant adaptations that have occurred in order to better survive hot and dry summers and cold winters.
This upcoming week, we will take a closer look at the animals of the prairie. We will be discussing the different adaptations animals have had to make in order to survive in the tall grasses. Our unit will culminate as we head to Meadowbrook Park on September 11 to take a closer look at prairie plants and to walk through the tall grasses. Ask your student about what they find interesting about the prairie! This upcoming week, we will officially begin our "Superstar of the Week". Each week, a student will be highlighted (I was the "Superstar" last week). On the Friday before, I will give the Superstar a "Get to Know You" sheet, as seen on the right. The Superstar will have the opportunity to fill it out over the weekend and bring it in on Monday. On Tuesday (or Monday if they wish), the Superstar can bring in different pictures to share with the class. On Wednesday, the students will have the opportunity to interview the Superstar. On Thursday, the Superstar can bring in something they would like to share with the class. On Friday, the Superstar can bring in a special snack to share with the class (please do not feel obligated to bring in a special snack). This will be a fun way for students to be highlighted each week and for the class to get to know one another better. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! We can't wait to learn all about one another!
We will have Pajama Day on Friday, August 7th. The students filled up our Jar of Marbles and earned their first party already. Woohoo!
We have had a great start to the new school year. The students are learning more about one another and seem to be having a great time together. We did a lot of different activities to get acquainted with one another as well as learned different routines and expectations in the classroom.
We got our new Chromebooks in our classroom and the students will be introduced to those this upcoming week. Being one-to-one in the classroom should change the way the students access and produce information in the classroom. This is the first year we've had such easy access to technology so I'm sure we will learn a lot together. This upcoming week, our schedule should begin to look and feel like the norm in 3rd grade. We will begin our reading, writing, math, and science curriculums. We will also be getting more regular homework so be sure to check your child's backpack. Thanks for a great start to the school year! Ms. Maa Today, we begin a new school year. It's been great meeting the new students and parents in the classroom. Please stop by our original building and visit Room 137! We'd love to give you a tour and show off all the ways we are learning and getting to know one another!
