We have had another wonderful week together. The students are getting better everyday at knowing and following our classroom routines. We had discussions about how we are a school family together and we have the choice to make it a great year or a not so great year together. We may not always get along with one another, but we are stuck together and we should try our best to make the most of all our time together.
Reading: We finished our reading test and will begin our reading groups this upcoming week. The students are doing very well and we have been talking about fluency. We discussed how fluent readers do not read too fast or too slow and they read with expression. Please continue to emphasize these points with your child as you read at home with them each night.
Math: We finished off Unit 1 this past week, looking at relations between numbers. We reviewed our concept of greater than, less than, and equal to. When using the different symbols for showing the relationship between two numbers, we talked about how the "alligator" always wants to eat the bigger number. We started Unit 2 on Friday, talking about how numbers can be used in number stories. When we give our answers for number stories, we need to remember to include a unit when answering the question.
Science: We have been busy learning the different parts of butterflies and learned they have the same parts as a bee, but it just looks different! The students have been recording what they see in our butterfly net and have been so excited to welcome the butterflies into our classroom!
Writing: We began our fiction writing unit. We began looking at some of our favorite fiction books. As students explored these books, we were able to come up with a list of different characteristics we came across in the books we were reading. The students saw that many of the characters were made up animals, robots, etc., there was some sort of setting in each story, there was a problem and solution, and so many more. We will begin looking at each component of fiction separately as we begin writing our own fiction stories.
Superstar of the Week: Next week will be Payton. We can't wait to learn more about him!
