Reading: Last week, we read books about getting along. The class loved The Mine-O-Saur and The Recess Queen. Starting this week, we will begin our questioning unit whereby students ask and answer their own questions. We will begin with some modeling and then practice as a class. A week after that, we will slowly start to make them individually. The focus is whether students can ask and answer their own questions in response to a story.
Math: Last week, we began our new unit on decimals and place value. We learned about notation and equivalencies for money amounts decimal notation for pennies and dimes, and money amounts with a calculator. Our most popular math game, introduced the week before intersession, is Spinning for Money, and the class loves friendly competition.
Science: We have just started our unit on rocks and soil. For the next couple of weeks, the class will be exploring how rocks are all around us, how rocks change, rock roles, and how to use rocks responsibly. Last week, we investigated basalt, tuff, and scoria. We sorted and washed them in water. We also sorted river rocks after washing them and sorted them by various properties. We will also begin to bring in rocks for our own rock collections; please help us out by allowing your child to share any rocks they've found!
Writing: We began our poetry writing unit last week. We have been learning to use poetic features such as poet's eyes, voice, and line breaks. We have read poems by authors, written poems together as a class, and have begun writing poems individually. The students have been having fun writing about a variety of topics. Many were inspired by the thunderstorm last Wednesday.
Superstar of the Week: Our Superstar of the week this next week will be Raquel. We can't wait to learn more about her!!
